Public officials in representative democracies are bound by statutory disclosure frameworks to declare outside assets, equity holdings, liabilities, and directorships. Our investigative team indexes official government disclosures to construct minimum valuation models, cross-referenced with public property valuations, corporate registries, and capital market pricing.
Under the federal Conflict of Interest Act, MPs submit confidential balance sheets to the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner (CIEC). Because the public registry legally redacts exact dollar figures, Worthle verifies declared corporate holdings, blind trusts, and commercial partnerships against public corporate and land registries.
Under the Members of Parliament Retiring Allowances Act (MPRAA), federal pensions vest after 6 full years of service and accrue at 3% per year. We compute the actuarial capitalized present transfer value of each lawmaker's guaranteed defined-benefit pension annuity based on their parliamentary tenure.
Primary and secondary residences are benchmarked using municipal property assessment baselines (MPAC in Ontario, BC Assessment, and provincial registries) and calibrated against Statistics Canada's C$519,700 household median to realistically reflect non-vested, indebted, and early-career lawmakers.
Former Prime Minister Paul Martin (shipping magnate, Canada Steamship Lines) and Ontario Premier Doug Ford (Deco Labels & Tags) rank at the top of national political wealth, while Premier François Legault (C$12,000,000) leads among provincial premiers following his Air Transat commercial exit.
Unlike the US STOCK Act which publishes broad dollar brackets, Canada's Conflict of Interest Act is qualitative—it records asset categories and liabilities for conflict-of-interest monitoring, but statutorily redacts dollar balances. Worthle bridges this gap by combining CIEC asset registrations with statutory pension formulas (MPRAA) and provincial land registries.
Data is compiled from the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner (CIEC), the Members of Parliament Retiring Allowances Act (MPRAA), provincial property assessment registries (MPAC, BC Assessment), and Statistics Canada wealth surveys.
